You first need to find out what your potential customer base is searching for – this may not be what you expect.

Use Wordtracker or similar tools to research keywords and key phrases. Find phrases that lots of people are searching for , that relate to your products or services, but which have relatively few competing websites.

Use these phrases as the basis of your campaign. Write lots of good, key-phrase-rich, web content around them and optimise your individual web pages based on these words. Do it yourself if you have the time to learn how, or get a reputable Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) company to do it for you.

Secondly, find relevant resources on other sites that relate to what you do, and link to them. This provides value for your site visitors.

Run a campaign to get links from sites to which your expanding and resourceful site would add value for their visitors. This will bring in visitors from these sites and increase your positioning in the search engine results pages.

The key is to make your site the best you can to serve the needs of potential visitors.

Avoid any ways of trying to trick the search engines, or anyone who offers such services. They will likely get your site banned from the search engines!

That would be a good way to start an SEO campaign, bringing people who are looking to buy your goods or services to your site. There much more to it, but that would be an excellent first SEO initiative.
